About Us
AIM GeoAnalytics is a Missoula based geoscience company providing analytical services, geological consulting, project support, core storage, and technical training. Since 2012, AIM has helped clients evaluate geologic materials and complex subsurface systems across mining, energy, and environmental projects.
Our work connects observations made in the field and laboratory with the larger geologic setting. We integrate core and cuttings descriptions, mineralogy, petrography, geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing, GIS, and 3D modeling to produce interpretations that clients can use in exploration, development, and environmental decision making.
Since 2012, AIM GeoAnalytics has been providing reliable, high-quality geologic analytical services, geological consulting, and customized geoscience training to the energy industry. We bring together academic excellence and recognized teaching experience in geoscience with hands-on exploration work across oil, gas, mining, hydrogen, and environmental systems. MSHA-certified and highly experienced in underground mapping and extensive core logging, we understand both the realities of field operations and the demands of modern data analytics. How We Work
AIM builds each scope around the project question, the available data, and the decision the client needs to make. Assignments range from a single sample or focused technical review to multi phase field, drilling, analytical, and modeling programs.
Our geoscientists bring experience from academic research, laboratory analysis, underground and surface field work, core logging, drilling programs, and professional instruction. That combination helps us identify which observations matter, where uncertainty remains, and what additional work would improve the interpretation.
Our Team
Our team combines specialists in sedimentology, stratigraphy, mineralogy, petrography, structural geology, economic geology, basin analysis, field mapping, and data integration. Individual biographies should focus on each person’s current role, technical specialties, relevant project experience, and professional qualifications.
Dr. Michael H. Hofmann, Chief Executive Officer
Michael is a founder and principal of AIM GeoAnalytics. He has worked in the energy sector for the past 15 years. His technical expertise lies in sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology, petrography, and integrated basin analysis. He has worked in diverse basins in North America and around the world. After earning his Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Montana, he worked as a senior geologist for ConocoPhillips’ Subsurface Technology, Sedimentary Systems, and Shale Stratigraphy groups in Houston, TX. Before forming AIM GeoAnalytics in 2012, he worked as an independent consultant, providing geological expertise to energy industry. He is currently a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Montana. Michael supervises and manages AIM GeoAnalytics’ technical and business operations.
Dr. Marc S. Hendrix, Chief Scientific Officer
Marc is a founder and principal of AIM GeoAnalytics, and has over 30 years of experience as a geologist. His research has focused on the sedimentary record of petroleum-producing basins in North America, Central Asia, and East Africa. His expertise is in integrating geologic field observations with sedimentologic, mineralogic, petrographic, and geochemical analyses to understand sedimentation history and diagenesis and their effects on the heterogeneities and quality of petroleum source and reservoir facies. He earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University, and his M.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently a Professor of Geology in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Montana. Marc provides technical expertise and supervises quality control of AIM Geoanalytics’ geological analysis and work product.
David T. McGee, M.S. Principal Geologist, Geological Advisor
Dave has over 30 years of experience in the petroleum industry. He has worked for Shell, Unocal, ConocoPhillips, Apache, and Maersk in capacities from exploration to development and technology. His technical expertise is in sequence and seismic stratigraphy, sedimentology, reservoir description, and integrated studies from basin- to reservoir-scale. He has worked on six of the seven continents – including in the Gulf of Mexico and the Permian Basin in North America; the North Sea, East and West Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America. He earned his M.S. in Geology from the University of Oklahoma, and his B.A. in Geology from the University of Montana. He has published literature and presented on topics in seismic stratigraphy and reservoir description, and taught training seminars on and led field trips to diverse depositional systems around the world. He currently teaches courses on sandstone reservoirs and deepwater depositional systems for Petroskills. Dave oversees technical projects at AIM GeoAnalytics as a senior geological adviser, and is also involved with business development.
Dr. Steven L. Bachtel, Principal Geologist/Geological Advisor
Steve has 30 years of experience as a reservoir geologist in exploration, development, and research roles. His career has focused on carbonate and mixed carbonate-siliciclastic reservoir characterization and stratigraphy using integrated datasets including core, log, seismic, production, and outcrop data. Steve has previously worked for ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, and Chevron and has investigated many of the major carbonate fields in the world including those in the Pricaspian Basin, Timan-Pechora Basin, Permian Basin, the Middle East, and SE Asia. Steve was an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer in 2006-2007 and has given invited talks on seismic stratigraphy in carbonates. He teaches field and classroom training seminars in Modern and ancient carbonate systems. He received his M.S. from the University of Idaho and his PhD from Texas A&M University. Steve is currently an Adjunct Professor at The University of Texas at Austin.
Brianna M. Berg, M.S. Geologist
Brianna completed a B.S. in Geosciences, with honors, from the University of Montana during which time she participated in the International Field Geosciences program and was a member of the University of Montana AAPG Imperial Barrel Award team, winners of the Rocky Mountain Section competition in 2015. She worked as a Geotechnician with Rio Tinto before returning to school to receive her M.S. in Petroleum Geosciences from University College Dublin. She has worked with AIM since 2016 applying her diverse geologic knowledge to analytical projects throughout the range of services we provide, from basin-scale to pore-scale studies, and with a focus on Confocal Microscopy, Petrography, and Mineralogic analysis. She is pursuing her M.B.A. at the University of Montana and currently serves as the AAPG Rocky Mountain Section Student Chapter Coordinator and Treasurer of the Association of Women Geoscientists.
